Using a skip bin on Council land

Many of our customers hiring larger skip bins do not have the space in their driveway to keep the skip bin. Your skip bin will therefore need to be placed on Council land. If you require a permit for your skip bin Big Bin Hire will arrange this for you and no extra charge. Unfortunately you will be required to pay for the skip bin permit when booking with Big Bin Hire, however we pass on 100% of this fee to your local Council.

Most of our customers do not know the cost of a skip bin permit, so we have included a brief list below of some of the fees your local Council will charge for the placement of a skip bin on Council land.

How to Save Money on Hiring a Skip Bin

1. If possible aim to sort your waste into categories - green waste, timber, concrete, bricks, metal.
2. Look at the possibility of having two skip bins to sort your rubbish into (see point 3).
3. Discuss your waste type in detail when you call us so we can see if reduced pricing applies.
4. Use a local supplier such as us - Big Bin Hire - as that will ensure there are no timing delays when your skip bin is delivered or picked up. It will also make it easier if there are time constraints around your skip bin delivery.
5. Seek a price for the next size (up or down) as you may find you have too much or too little waste. Have a look at our skip bin sizes to see what size will suit you the best.
6. If you are aware of the square metre dimensions of the rubbish you are clearing, ask our customer service team if they can estimate the skip bin size for you. We are more than happy to recommend a skip bin size.
7. Make sure you hire a walk-in skip bin to allow for ease of loading. All of Big Bin Hire's skip bins are designed to walk-in with a wheel barrow.

Ever wondered where your skip bin rubbish ends up?

You may have seen recent news stories about rogue skip bin operators illegally dumping your skip bin rubbish on the side of the road or on vacant blocks of land.

Big Bin Hire takes a very serious approach to recycling and we do our very best to ensure your skip bin footprint from an environmental perspective is limited.

As mentioned in other posts, we do our best to ensure that the skip bin size we provide you is appropriate for your waste needs.

When we pick your skip bin up from your site, we take it back to our premises where we meticulously sort your skip bin waste into categories such as timber, green waste, concrete, bricks and soil. We even attempt to make soil skip bins as clean as possible so the remaining product can be reused as top soil.

We estimate that we recycle 70% of all rubbish received; meaning 30% of rubbish goes to land fill.

Recycling does however come with a cost (equipment, labour etc), but this is essential to ensure that we are not dumping 100% of your skip bin waste in land fill.

Make sure you let us know if you think you can sort your rubbish on site to help with our recycling costs and we will ensure you receive a cheaper price for your efforts.

What does skip bin hire cost?

We get hundreds of calls a week from customers looking for skip bin hire. After all, skip bin hire is our business.

Often the customer is hiring a skip bin for the first time is unfamiliar with skip bin hire costs.

We always take the time to explain to the customer that skip bin hire costs depend on the following:

• Skip bin size
• Waste type going in the skip bin
• The location of where the skip bin will be delivered.

Like most services these days, customers are expecting great value for money. We like to ensure our customers up-front that our prices are very competitive and we  aim to keep our costs low.

Our skip bin hire costs include the following factors: travel time (for our driver's to deliver and pick up the skip bin to the Melbourne location); sorting of the customer's waste once the skip bin is returned to our site; tip/transfer station fees which include EPA levies.

Once we have factored all of the above variables into our pricing equation, we can determine cost effective skip bin prices for our customers.

To give you a pricing example: a customer based in Richmond, Melbourne looking to hire a 6m3 skip bin to dispose of office-type waste (carboard, plastic, paper) can expect to pay roughly $350 including GST for a skip bin on their site.
